The US Embassy in Nigeria has asked American expatriates resident in Nigeria to be vigilant in the build up to the Eid festivities at the end of the holy month of Ramadan, this was stated in a release by the Embassy in Abuja monitored Friday morning
“With the history of attacks throughout Nigeria in the weeks leading up to Muslim and Christian holidays, the Mission reminds personnel to be vigilant during the upcoming end of Ramadan and Eid-al-Fitr Holiday.
“The U.S. Mission advises all U.S. citizens to be particularly vigilant around churches, mosques, and other places of worship; locations where large crowds may gather; hotels; markets; malls; and other areas frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers particularly during the final days of the Muslim month Ramadan and the subsequent holiday Eid-al-Fitr. U.S. Citizens should expect additional police and military checkpoints, additional security, and possible road blocks throughout the country during the holiday season.
The Department of State has instructed certain U.S. Embassies and Consulates to remain closed or to suspend operations on Sunday, August 4. The Department has been apprised of information that, out of an abundance of caution and care for our employees and others who may be visiting our installations, indicates we should institute these precautionary steps. It is possible we may have additional days of closings as well, depending on our analysis.
“The embassy in Abuja and U.S. consulate in Lagos are not normally open on Sunday and will not be affected by these closures at this time and the U.S. embassy and consulate expect to maintain normal working hours, the statement added
The Department, when conditions warrant, takes steps like this to balance our continued operations with security and safety. However, beyond this announcement we do not discuss specific threat information, security considerations or measures, or other steps we may be taking.
