The Appeal panel has upheld the decision of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA to disqualify Barrister Chinedu Idigo from the Anambra Governorship race.
According to a statement by Idigo, the panel’s decision was based on the intending candidate’s “doubtful financial capacity to prosecute the election”.
Idigo stated that the reason stated by the panel is “quite laughable and comes as a surprise it is not a condition for disqualification under Articles 5 & 6 of our party’s electoral guidelines”.
He also noted that “Besides, Article 26 (2) of our party’s constitution states, “All candidates on the platform of the party shall have their electioneering campaign sponsored by the party”.
However, Barr. Idigo expressed gratitude to those who have stood by him, saying “I sincerely thank my family, our loyal party men and women at the grassroots and His Excellency Gov. Peter Obi for standing by me. I urge all my supporters to remain calm while we explore all the options available to us”.
APGA’s Gubernatorial Screening Panel had disqualified some aspirants including former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Prof. Charles Soludo, immediate past Secretary to the state Government, Chief Oseloka Obaze. Some of the reasons for this decision by the party were based on non – presentation of voters cards, no evidence of financial strength, incomplete certificate, no evidence of tax clearance amongst others.
