Lagos based lawyer and politician, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite has declared that except corruption is dethroned before Nigeria’s next general elections in 2015, there would be a catastrophic explosion in the country.
He said corruption has affected all spheres of the country’s sectors and thus put the current democracy in fragile foundation, portending danger for the people.
Braithwaite in his lecture at the 2013 Jesus Carnival, 37th Diocesan
Anniversary and 170 years Christianity in Egbaland held in Abeokuta on
Tuesday, predicted that a mass protest by the people would bring
about the explosion.
In the paper titled: Gods Love for the world (John 3:16-18), the
politician declared: “the die is cast! The issue is not about 2015
elections or who becomes President or Governor in 2015. There are a
whole lot of fundamental and foundational matters to be urgently
addressed by Nigerian people before 2015”.
He contended that “the King corruption and impunity in this country at
every level of civil administration has exposed the tenuous and
fragile foundation of Nigeria’s brand of democracy and the danger, it
portends for the people.
According to him, “The electoral, judicial and administrative systems
and practices are so steep in corruption to the extent that unless the
people collectively and with singleness of purpose stand up squarely
to dethrone king corruption before, I repeat, before any general
election, there would be a catastrophic explosion”.
Braithwaite further remarked that the on-going revolution in Egypt,
“is a classical lesson that the charade and fraudulent elections
contrived will-nilly, per se is no guarantee of security of tenure of
office for an unfit and insensitive government”, he posited.
He condemned the proposed plan by the federal government to celebrate
the 100 years of the amalgamation of the country, declaring that it is
a disgrace to the present generation.
“What is there to celebrate? It would have been a different thing
altogether , if we were celebrating a founding-father’s birth of a
nation that over the years has blossomed into a strong, cohesive and
socio/political vibrant force in the comity of nations.
“The reverse, sadly is the case here. We therefore call on President
Jonathan to perish the idea of this disgraceful celebration”,Braitwaite opined.
He suggested that instead of clinking glasses of champagne celebrating
and venerating a bad history of enslavement, this generation, should
use the occasion of its centenary to finally destroy its last
inglorious relics, and simultaneously birth a modern and progressive
nation. It is a duty and an imperative for this generation”
