Dr Yemisi Oloowokere, a Dietician with Garki Hospital, Abuja, says grapes provide energy to the cells and promote the health of the arteries.
Oloowokere told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja that grapes also lowered high blood pressure.
She said the fruit strengthened the body when recovering from anaemia, gastritis with high acidity, metabolism disorder, chronic insomnia and constipation.
The dietician said grapes had the ability to treat constipation, indigestion, fatigue, kidney disorders, macular degeneration and the prevention of cataracts.
“They are good sources of vitamin C, A, K, carotenes, and b-complex such as pyridoxine, riboflavin and thiamin.
According to “Diet365 Global”, grapes are low in calories, adding, “100g of fresh grapes provide 69 calories but zero cholesterol levels”.
Oloowokere said that the fruit also contained polyhenoliz, phytochemical and compound resveratol, which were powerful anti oxidants.
“Oxidants have been found to play a protective role against cancers of colon and prostrate, coronary heart disease, degenerative nerve disease.’’
“Grapes are excellent for eliminating uric acid in the kidneys due to their alkalising and diuretic effects. They are rich sources of micro nutrient mineral like copper, iron and manganese.”
She said that grapes contained flavonoids, a very powerful antioxidant, which reduced the damage caused by free radicals and slowed down ageing.
“Dried grapes known as raisins are extremely nutritious and can help treat many disorders such as acidosis, anaemia, fever, and sexual dysfunction.’’
“Raisins can also help people gain weight quickly and protect the health and functional integrity of their eyes.’’
