The Director General, National Orientation Agency, Mr. Mike Omeri has said the recent state visit of President Goodluck Jonathan to the People’s Republic of China will soon begin to produce visible benefits for Nigerians, among which is the importation of only high quality products into Nigeria.
Omeri disclosed this on Friday when he received his Consumer Protection Council (CPC) counterpart, Mrs. Dupe Atoki on a working visit.
The working visit was aimed strethening existing relations between the two organs of government and to evolve more effective strategies for consumer rights promotion and protection in Nigeria.
Omeri believes Nigerians deserved only the best which was why the president ensured that only the best is served to Nigerians. According o him, NOA and CPC are working together to ensure that all Nigerian exports are quality products. The NOA DG pledged to assist the CPC in enlightening Nigerians on their rights as consumers of products and services including the right to replacement of items bought in faulty condition.
Omeri also assured of NOA’s willingness to enlighten suppliers and manufacturers on the need to buy into CPC’s Products and Services Registration (PROSERVE) in the interest of both consumer protection and products/services clear identification.
According to Mrs. Atoki, a bill was pending at the National Assembly which seeks to reposition the CPC by repealing the existing CPC Act and enacting a new one that confers more robust powers on the Council to enable it effectively protect consumers.
Atoki revealed that among the new powers the bill will give the CPC if passed is the power to establish Tribunals, Small Claims Courts and Mobile Courts across the country to dispense justice on consumer rights related issues.
She stressed the need for consumer rights education in the protection on same rights because, according to her, rights cannot be guaranteed where they are not known.
“We must educate consumers on their rights and where to seek redress when those rights are infringed upon. That is why we are partnering with the NOA to leverage on its structures and platforms in every corner of the country to ensure that Nigerians are familiar with these rights. I am glad that NOA already has a good working relationship with CPC under my predecessor and I intend to build upon that”, she said.
