Yeni Kuti: Nigerian leaders are bad examples

JETHRO IBILEKE/Benin

Yeni Kuti, eldest daughter of late Afro beat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has said it was wrong for Nigerians to expect change when the country is being led by leaders who are not only old but who give bad examples to the younger generations.

Yeni who spoke in Benin on the topic “Understanding Fela, his music and message to the Youth,” at a symposium organised by Women’s Health and Action Research Centre, (WHARC), to mark the International Youth Day, said Nigerian leaders were teaching the youths that corruption pays by allowing corrupt officials walk free.

She noted that Nigeria will make progress when young people are allowed to take position of leadership.

She therefore, urged the youths to emulate her father by speaking and singing songs against societal ills and the evils in the land.

“It is very important to remind today’s generation of the values that propelled our national heroes like Fela to the top because values are in danger of erosion today.

“Nowadays, the emphasis is on instant gratification. Everyone wants to get rich and famous without hard work, dedication and perseverance. I believe Fela’s life and experience show a clear message here.

“Fela should be a source of inspiration for young people all over Africa of what is possible to achieve if you are talented, hard working, courageous and willing to stand for the truth,” Yeni said.

Earlier in his speech, Executive Director of WHARC, Prof. Cyril Mokwenye, urged the youth not to copy bad examples of elders in the society but those with sterling qualities, noting that Nigerian Youths have much to offer if given the opportunity and encouragement.
