The palace of Olumegbon of Lagos in Isale Eko, Lagos State, was razed by fire on Sunday.

According to reports, the fire which stated about 7am, also affected about 30 other rooms in the palace compound.

Though the cause of the fire has not been ascertained, the Lagos State Fire Service believes it was an electric surge.

Residents of the palace were said not to have been able to salvage any property however no one was injured or killed in the fire.

The Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Razaq Fadipe, disclosed that the palace is made of ancient clay and is in a compound which has another building with over 16 rooms. The entire property was gutted by fire and began to spread to the next street.

He said three fire trucks from different fire stations were deployed to combat the fire. “We put out the fire but unfortunately, the fire had damaged almost everything. Many of the buildings in the area are too close together and this made work difficult for us. The wiring in the area is also very porous. We believe that the fire emanated from an electrical spark.”
