President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday attended the 53rd independence anniversary celebrations of Benin Republic, as a guest of honour, in Cotonou.

Jonathan, arrived in Cotonou early Thursday and attended the military and civilian parades held at the Etoile Rouge Square, along with his host President Boni Yayi, before returning home.

Apart from the parades, the celebrations also featured calisthenics by students, with themes such as agriculture, youth, environment, health and love for the country highlighted in the displays.

This year’s celebrations were low-keyed in view of the economic hardships being faced by many citizens.
