The traditional ruler of Cardoso town in Ayobo Ipaja Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, High Chief Moroof Aremu Owonla has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar over an alleged extortion by a senior police officer at the State CID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos.

In the petition dated 24 March, 2013 the Baale alleged that the superintendent of police who is in charge of a sensitive department in the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba extorted N400,000 from him under serious pressure.

High Chief Owonla, popularly known as kaka, stated that he travelled out of the country on Monday, 11 March, 2013 and returned on Friday, 22 March, 2013 and received a call from the said police officer that he should report at their office without telling him why he was being invited.

He said he later got to know that the police officer got his phone number from his two brothers whom the officer had arrested and detained before he arrived from the United States of America.

Says the monarch: “As a law abiding citizen, I reported at the state CID Panti, where I met the superintendent of police, oblivious of the arrest and detention of my two brothers. When he told me that he had arrested my brothers, I asked what their offences were and he told me that he would only tell me their offences and release them if I can arranged the sum of N500,000 for him and his team.

“I told him I cannot afford such amount, but he threatened and mounted pressure that he would implicate my brothers and ensure that they rot away in jail. He pressured and threatened me to submission on that Saturday, forcing me to cough-out the sum of N400,000 without any justification.”

He further alleged that he personally discovered that some people who had at one time or the other threatened and physically assaulted him were those influencing the unprofessional conduct of the officer in question.

Kaka appealed to the Inspector General of Police to investigate his allegation in the petition and bring the accused to book.
