Health workers under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals on Thursday have appealed to anti-graft agencies to probe the management of the nation’s teaching hospitals and allied institutions.

They also demanded the immediate removal of the Health Minister, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, over alleged discrimination and non-implementation of the Presidential Committee report in the sector.

The call was made by NUAHP National President, Mr. Felix Faniran after the union’s National Executive Council meeting in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

According to him, “ICPC and EFCC must intervene in teaching hospitals’ management. There are so many atrocities and rots going on, especially in the running of these hospitals.”

Faniran noted that Chukwu had failed in his handling of the nation’s health sector, even as he accused him of favouring medical doctors at the expense of other medical professionals.

He stressed that Chukwu’s failure to implement the Presidential Committee’s report on harmony in the sector as approved since November 2011, had worsened the problems in the sector.

He said, “We have carefully studied the committee’s report, which consists of 27 recommendations and we are of the strong opinion that if these recommendations are implemented, harmony shall be restored to, a large extent, in the health sector.”

Meanwhile, the union, in a communiqué after its meeting in Abeokuta, called for an end to the appointment of Chief Medical Directors of tertiary health institutions without recourse to other qualified health care professionals.

It said, “The current practice where full time university workers are appointed as chief medical directors instead of full time employees of the hospital shall no longer be acceptable.

“All members of the union who are qualified should henceforth apply and be considered along with others for appointment.”
