It is becoming clear by the day that President Goodluck Jonathan is fast losing his support base in the entire country with the South West not willing to risk its support in the forth-coming election for the PDP.

It will be recalled that, in 2011, Jonathan won five out of the six states of the South West geo-political zone which implied that the Yoruba race voted for the President as a person other than a political party in a zone that is regarded as a stronghold of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

Findings have revealed that the choice of the ACN national chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, for a national honour recently which was roundly rejected by Jonathan might have grieved some Yoruba elites who seem to have reconsidered their support for the President.

Akande was said to have been chosen by the Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, as the sole candidate from the state for the award. But his nomination was turned down by the Presidency for no convincing reason.

A credible source close to the ACN chieftain disclosed that Jonathan displayed “his vindictive” tendency because “Akande refused to carry out the precept of the President,” he said.

According to the source, after the 2011 general election, Jonathan reached out to all the political parties and solicited their support in an enlarged meeting call at his instance. “The aim of that meeting was for him (Jonathan) to convince the opposition in particular about the need to form a government of national unity.

“At the end of that meeting, ACN had to analyse that import of the federal government’s idea of national unity government and the party objected to it. The reason was to enable the opposition to have a free atmosphere to criticize government when necessary.

“That disposition did not go down well with Jonathan. So all along, he has been looking for a way of co-opting the leadership of the ACN which is the most vibrant opposition party in the country into their mainstream, but has never worked,” the source explained.

The second meeting between Jonathan and the leadership of the opposition parties exposed the secret game plan of the President who despite advice from the stakeholders against the removal of the 2012 oil subsidy fell on deaf ears.

Akande was said to have been peeved up by the President’s attitude of not consulting widely before venturing to take drastic decisions on issues that affect the generality of Nigerian citizens.

The source also lamented on the public outcry of the Yorubas who look dumped by Jonathan after giving him a massive vote to become President in the last election.

He explained that the non consideration of Bisi Akande’s candidature for the national honour award may not be unconnected with the unilateral posturing of the South West governors to pitch tent with the camp of the chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) and the Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi.

More so, the gimmicks allegedly deployed by the Presidency to scuttle the registration of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which is viewed as party with Yoruba-based political philosophy, also informs the South West’s stance against Jonathan’s 2015 ambition.
