JETHRO IBILEKE/Benin

With less than three weeks to the local government elections in Edo State, an aggrieved councillorship aspirant of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), has petitioned the State Command of the Department of State Security Service (DSSS), alleging that the father of the successful candidate deposed to his son’s age declaration six years after he died.

Besides, the aggrieved aspirant, Okunbor Paul Ikponmwosa, also accused the candidate for Ward 08, Urhonigbe South in Orhionmwon local government area, Osaretin Okunkpolor, to whom he lost nomination to, forgery of declaration of age document.

The petitioner averred that before the 25th day of January, 2013, the councillorship candidate falsely prepared an affidavit of age declaration that was signed by his late father, Okunkpolor David, who died and was buried on 13th day of September, 2008.

Ikponmwosa in the petition dated April 2, 2013, further alleged that the ACN candidate relying upon the said forged document, went ahead to fill Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) form M, which is a requirement for seeking election to councillorship position in a Local Government Council in the State.

He therefore urged the security agency to cause an investigation to be made into the matter so as to uncover the relevant facts and save the country from coming under the grips of criminals in public offices, adding that a situation where a person is seeking election into public office with false documents is certainly a national security issue pointing out that the security service has the powers to uncover crimes of this nature.

Ikponmwosa also opined that the act of Osaretin Okunkpolor procuring the commissioner for oath to sign the said affidavit and electoral form is a crime punishable under section 471 of the criminal code cap 48 laws of the defunct Bendel State, as applicable to Edo state, arguing that the presentation of a forged affidavit before the commissioner for oath in High Court of Justice, Benin City amounts to forgery, which offence is punishable under section 467 of the criminal code cap 48 laws of the defunct Bendel State as applicable to Edo state.

Attached with the petition was the affidavit of the age declaration of the councillorship candidate deposed to by the late father, photocopy of a special burial invitation card of the “late Okunkpolor David aged 74 years, who slept in the Lord on Saturday, 13th September, 2008” and was interred on Sunday 9th November, 2008,” and the certify true copy of Form EDSIEC M.

The invitation card was signed by Osaretin Okunkpolor himself on behalf of the family and the said affidavit was also attached to the petition.

When contacted on for comment on the forgery allegation, the ACN councilorship candidate, Okunkpolor, who said he was in the village (Urhonigbe) for campaign, said the petition was the handiwork of his political opponents who were out to distract him from realizing his ambition.
