Workers of Nigeria’s Public Complaints Commission (PCC) and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), slated for merger, in consonance with a restructuring of federal agencies, have complained that they might lose their jobs.

There are also complaints of possible job losses from the other agencies to be affected by the report of the Stephen Oronsaye-led Presidential Committee on Rationalisation and Restructuring of government Commissions and Agencies.

Mr Chukwuemeka Nwosu, the PRO of the Public Complaints Commission, told NAN that he was not aware of the merger of the two commissions, adding that he only read about it in the Newspapers.

“We only saw in the newspapers this morning that the commission will be merged with NHRC: We are yet to be officially informed,’’ he said.

Nwosu said that the commission was a constitutional creation, adding that it would be impossible for the commission to be scrapped unless the constitution was amended.

He noted that the merger would cost some workers their jobs, adding that the duties of the commission were not the same with those of the NHRC.

He said that the complaints commission’s activities were on administration while NHRC activities were on human activities.

NAN reports that some workers at the commission expressed worries as they were afraid of losing their jobs or making some staff redundant.

One of the staff of the commission, who pleaded anonymity, said that the merger would create unemployment and poverty in the country and urged the Federal Government to create another helpful alternative that would save people’s jobs.

At the National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP), one of the agencies listed in the proposed restructure, the staff expressed worries at the development.

The staff, who also pleaded anonymity, said they were confused as the agency proposed to replace NAPEP would be a new one.

The group said that they only became aware of the development when they read about it on the pages of newspapers.

NAN recalls that the Oronsaye-led Presidential Committee Report recommended that NAPEP be replaced with the National Agency for Job Creation and Empowerment.

The report added that it aimed to help government effect a drastic reduction in the size of its bloated bureaucracy, eliminating duplication of functions and bringing down the cost of governance.
