Traders in Katangowa market have expressed dissatisfaction over the proposed move to relocate the market.

Speaking with P.M.NEWS BusinessWeek, Chairman, Okirika Dealers Association, Odus Ikejiobi, said if the move to relocate traders from the market is implemented, it will prevent traders from recouping the huge amount of money invested in erecting shops, make-shift stalls, kiosks and on their businesses over the years.

Ikejioba said Gatankowa market is far becoming an international market and that government should be careful in making any move that can affect the commercial value the market commands.

Another trader, Emmanuel Okafor said that the present location is central and can be easily accessed by customers or other traders who would want to patronize them.

Okafor’s headache, like other traders, is that they might lose the huge patronage being enjoyed at the present location if they are relocated. “Quite a lot of people are familiar with this location and if you refer anybody to this market, they can easily locate it. But if we are relocated, it might take time to reconnect with our customers or for them to adjust to the new location and this will affect our businesses’’ the trader lamented.

Chioma Igwe, a fairly- used bag seller, is worried that traders would incur more cost to erect new shops if they are eventually relocated. “Getting a shop here in the first place was not easy. It was highly competitive because the traders are more than the available shops. If we are relocated now, I foresee a situation where traders would now begin to struggle for space,’’ she said.

Narrating their experience when the market was first cited, Ikejioba said most traders had to pay for clearing and building of shops at the initial stage before the market was later taken over by the government. He narrated that the present location was deserted then and that some traders suffered snake bites and insect attacks during the period. He is hoping the state government would give them a listening ear due to their sacrifice and contributions to the growth of the market.

There are reports that the Lagos State government plans to relocate the market in order to pave way for the proposed computer village. The traders suspect the market could be relocated or the existing traders merged with the computer traders. To the traders, none of the options seem viable and they therefore appealed to the government to have a re-think in the interest of their business and investments.

Kantagowa market, created in the 1980s, is located in Agbado/Oke-Odo LCDA. It is the hub for fairly-used clothes, shoes, bags and belts.

The market is renowned for its cheap but quality materials. Though business activities take place everyday, trading is at its peak on Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday as other traders from various parts of the country are usually present.
