A soldier and six suspected members of the Islamist sect, Boko Haram, lay dead yesterday in Kano in the latest confrontation between operatives of the Joint Task Force (JTF) and the sect.

Several other people were wounded in the early morning clash in Sheka Quarters of the metropolis.

The soldier was said to be from the 3rd Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Kano.

The wounded ones were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Fighting broke out at about 4.30 am when JTF operatives stormed a building suspected to have been harbouring the suspects.

The discovery of the building itself followed the arrest of some militants at Mariri Quarters.

Spokeman for the task force, Capt. Ikedichi Iweha, said the building had been demolished and some weapons recovered.

He said five women believed to be their wives and three toddlers were rescued during the operation.

Iweha said:”We engaged the terrorists in a gun duel which lasted for some hours. On our arrival in the house, they immediately opened fire, but our superior fire power subdued them, which resulted in the killing of six of their members while a soldier died of gun wound in the hospital.

“We were able to rescue five women and three toddlers, one of whom was hurt during the raid.”

Recovered from the sect were two AK47 rifles, 150 assorted ammunition, some explosives and five magazines.
