On Monday, at about 11 pm, when the Chairman of Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, Lagos, Comrade Kehinde Bamigbetan (former Chief Press Secretary to former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu), was about to enter his street, Ona Iwa Mimo, Ori-Oke near Egbe bridge in Ejigbo, some unidentified gunmen abducted him.

It was when the assailants called their victim’s wife, Fatimah, around 4.00 a.m. demanding $ 1 million (about N158 million) with a warning that she should not contact the police that the colour of the crime turned out to be kidnapping.

That night, Bamigbetan’s driver, Abiodun Olayiwola, tried all he could to escape with his boss, but their black SUV, with customised registration number, Lagos KOK, smashed into an electric pole and, in the process, the kidnappers made away with the chairman, while the driver successfully melted into the surrounding darkness.

According to Olayiwola, when he saw them, he put the SUV in reverse gear but the gunmen gave them a hot chase and started shooting in the air. He said they would not have succeeded in kidnapping Bamigbetan if the road was good and that the SUV was eventually halted by an electric pole and the victims could not proceed further.

What used to read like work of fiction from far flung places is creeping into Lagos! On Saturday 23 March at approximately 11 pm, a British citizen was kidnapped on Victoria Island, Lagos. But he was released on 27 March. Although there was no information about whether or not ransom was paid, it does not detract from the seriousness of the crime.

The incident and similar ones in other parts of the country put a big question mark on the capability of the Federal Government to decisively address insecurity in Nigeria. If the masses are not safe, local government bosses are vulnerable, the next victims of these criminals may be state governors and highly placed government officials.

There are different levels to finding solution to insecurity in Nigeria. The Federal Government should revisit the issue state police and community policing. If it means that the National Assembly should amend appropriate laws, it is fine.

While, to a large extent, the soaring rate of crime cannot be solely attributed to unemployment, we believe that if the Federal Government creates jobs directly and indirectly (by creating conducive environment for investments), youths that were hitherto willing tools of the devil would be meaningfully engaged.

Without heaping all the blames on government, the society has its own share in its collapsed value system. A situation whereby people who steal billions from public coffers are given a mere slap in the wrist and allowed to flaunt thier stolen wealth could encourage youths to engage in all manner of despicable acts such as kidnapping to make quick money and also live large like others. It is such big rogues that are rewarded with chieftaincy itles by traditional rulers; honorary degrees by our ivory towers and knighthoods and other bogus titles in churches and mosques.

In other words, money now means success, no matter how it is acquired and many Nigerians are ready to have it by any means-through robbery, kidnapping or ritual murder. We must all consciously revive our old values that placed much emphasis on being upright, hardworking, honest and selfless.
