An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Thursday in Lagos remanded a businessman, Joseph Osawe, 34, in prison, over alleged robbery. The Magistrate, Mrs Olufunke Hamzat, who gave the order, said the accused should be kept behind bars, pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Osawe, who resides at Olowosago Street in Ikorodu, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and robbery.

The prosecutor, Insp. Roman Unuigbe, told the court that the offences were committed at about 10:00 p.m. on 11 January at Ketu, Lagos.

Unuigbe said that Osawe, with others now at large, had earlier in the day gone to make inquiry about the price of a Toyota car valued N870,000, where it was displayed for sale by Mr Tunde Abolade.

He said that the accused then told the complainant that he was going to the bank to pay for the car.

Unuigbe said that the accused came back and presented a fake bank SMS transaction alert to Abolade as payment made for the car.

The prosecutor said that the accused, armed with gun and other dangerous weapon, waylaid Abolade while the dealer was driving the car home and robbed him of the vehicle.

He said that complainant was able to recognise the accused during the robbery, and reported the incident to the police.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 1(2) (a) and 5, of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act, Cap 398, Vol. XXII, Laws of Federation of Nigeria, 1990 (amended).

The plea of the accused was not taken, and the magistrate adjourned the case till June 4 for the DPP’s advice. (NAN)
