Justice Olanrewaju Mabekoje of the Ogun State High Court 3, Isabo, Abeokuta this morning adjourned till July 5 and 11, 2013, the continuation of the hearing of the charges against the former governor of the State.

Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arraigned the former governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel on a 38-count charge of stealing public funds, bribery, fraudulent conversion of public property and false declaration of assets.

EFCC alleged that the former governor stole N211.3 million between 2004 and May 29, 2011 while he was holding sway as the governor of the State and also converted government’s land in various parts of the state to his family’s use.

The defence Counsel today informed the court that their client’s matter at the appellate court had not been heard, thus requesting for more time from the court.

The defence, which was led by Mrs Titilayo Akinlawon (SAN) disclosed that the appellate court could not seat on the matter at the last hearing date and the matter had since been adjourned till another date.

According to her, “We will like to inform this honourble court that our matter at the appellate court could not be heard at the last adjournment date because the court did not seat and we have been given another date for the matter which is still pending at the appellate court in Ibadan.

“The court has fixed Friday 14 June, 2013 for the determination of our appeal at the court and we are requesting for further adjournment from this honourable court pending the hearing at the appellate court”, she
hinted.

In his response, Tayo Olukotun who led the prosecuting team stated that he has no reason to object to the adjournment being sought for by the defence counsel, saying, the determination of the matter at the appellate court in Ibadan will be awaited as requested by the defence counsel.

The Presiding Judge, Olanrewaju Mabekoje adjourned the matter till July 5 and 11, 2013.
