The Director General, National Orientation Agency, Mr. Mike Omeri has expressed the support of the Agency for the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) towards the success of the Commission’s National Identification Number (NIN) project, affirming that the scheme was a necessary step towards addressing the challenges of insecurity in the country.

The NOA boss made known this position during a working visit to the NIMC where he performed the civic duty of national registration and receiving his NIN immediately.

Mr. Omeri said the effort of the NIMC at unifying other existing forms of identification such as driver’s license, voter’s card, national identification card and Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards will eliminate contingencies hitherto experienced in data collection in the country and streamline the activities of all agencies involved in identification data collection thereby minimizing waste and maximizing convenience for Nigerians.

Mr. Omeri said further that the NIN will “reconnect Nigerians and uphold citizens’ right to identification and assist relevant agencies to tackle vices by people who do the wrong things such as terrorism”. In this regard, he pledged the NOA’s commitment to availing the NIMC with its numerous platforms for mass sensitization and mobilization towards participation in the national identification project. He said the over 5000 strong workforce of the NOA in all 774 Local Government Areas of the nation, speaking all the 520 indigenous Nigerian languages will facilitate grassroots communication of the need, ideals and processes of the project.

The NIMC Director General, Barr. Chris Onyemena stressed the need for his commission to partner with agencies like the NOA which focus on their core competences, especially those whose primary responsibility is to get the people to buy into government programmes. Quoting the famous scientist, Albert Einstein, Onyemena said his Commission had realized that “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them”, hence NIMC was set to leverage NOA’s institutional support, competence and specialization for the success of the NIN project.

He noted that the NIMC was in the process of routine upgrade of its identity management capacity and was willing to partner with other agencies providing identity services to ensure they conform to internationally accepted standards of identity management, urging such agencies to work with the NIMC which has the mandate to cater for all identity needs.
