Governor Abiola Ajimobi of western Nigerian state of Oyo has promised to assist victims of Monday’s fire incident at Omitowoju area of Ibadan.

Ajimobi gave the assurance when he visited the area on Tuesday to ascertain the extent of damage caused by the inferno.

A fuel-laden tanker had run into a ditch while manoeuvring through the area, spilling its content and bursting into flames.

About 16 houses and 26 shops were said to have been consumed in the inferno. Motor-cycles were also burnt by the fire.

Ajimobi directed that the names of all affected persons should be compiled for government to workout palliative measures that would cushion the effect of their losses.

He, however, warned against frivolous claims by those who were not affected, adding that government would not entertain fictitious names.

Ajimobi described the incident as an act of God and urged the victims not to be discouraged.

He also warned residents against storing fuel and other combustible items in their houses to prevent fire incidents.

The governor further advised residents against erecting structures close to the main road to avoid auto-accidents.

Three residents–Mr Sunday Ologunde, Mr Sakiru Ajani and Madam Munirat Adelani–appealed to government to ban tankers and other heavy duty vehicles from plying certain roads in the metropolis.

They claimed that the roads in the area were neighbourhood roads that were too narrow and dangerous for such trucks.

Meanwhile, victims of the fire have begun to count their losses, with many of them urging government to hasten its aid package.

Among the victims that spoke with our correspondent was Henry Egbuliwe who said that all his property rescued by hoodlums have been stolen.

“I was on night duty yesterday. I was on my way to my working place in Podo Area of Ibadan. I have gotten to Orita Challenge when my wife called me and told me that there was fire incident and it has affected our house. I had to turn back and by the time I got home, I did not meet anything in my room. They had stolen everything. I only recovered my refrigerator. I have no cloth again apart from the one you are seeing on me. My N185, 000 I kept at home has been stolen”, Henry said.

Iyaloja Ode Olo, Ibadan North Local Government, Chief Mrs. Motilade Adedeji, Fatai Raji and Johnson Olusegun who claimed that they had lost several millions of naira called on the state government to immediately found solution to their problem.

However, Senator Femi Lanlehin representing Oyo South Senatorial District and the Commissioner of Environment and Habitat, Mr. Lowo Obisesan and the Chairman, Ibadan North Local Government, Wasiu Olatubosun have sympathized with the victims promising that they would assist in whatever form.
