The Nigeria Academy of Letters on Wednesday in Abuja condoled with the family of late Prof. Chinua Achebe, who passed away on March 21.\u00a0The condolence message, contained in statement, was signed by the President of the Association, Prof. Munzali Jibril.<\/p>\n

\u201cAchebe is universally remembered as the author of Things Fall Apart and of Arrow of God, two of the great African novels of the twentieth century.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth are stories of colonial encounter told from the point of view of a post colonial,\u201d the statement said.
Jibril said the late Achebe\u2019s bequest to the younger generation include the creative writing journal “Okike\u2019\u2019 and the Association of Nigeria Authors that he founded a generation ago.
He described Achebe as a creative intellectual who was politically engaged with the issues of his country.
Jibril also described him as a spokesman for races, nations, ethnic groups and small communities.
The statement quotes Jibril as saying: \u201cHe was the visionary who would not see his people perish and would insist on the right of every community to tell its own story.\u201d (NAN)<\/p>\n
