Unidentified gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram on Sunday bombed many places in Ringim town in the Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.<\/p>\n

Places affected by the gunmen\u2019s fire, according to reliable sources, include the former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Hafiz Ringim\u2019s house, the Divisional Police Command and some other houses.<\/p>\n

Eyewitnesses told NAN the incident happened around 8.45 p.m. NAN gathered that as at the time of filing the report the town was still under heavy attack.<\/p>\n

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the state\u2019s Police Command, Abdu Jinjinri, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed the incident to NAN in an interview in Dutse.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody can, for now, say anything about the person responsible for the bombing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Jinjiri however explained that the incident had created serious tension in the town.<\/p>\n

\u201cA detachment of mobile policemen has been dispatched to the area to restore peace,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u00a0 .<\/p>\n

Ringim was reported to not be home at the time of the bombing. Sources said immediately he lost his job on 25 January, 2012 he travelled to the UK where he has remained till now.<\/p>\n

Ringim was reported to be seeking asylum in the United Kingdom in March this year. According to reports, his application was before the UK Border Agency.<\/p>\n

Sources say his request is on the grounds that Boko Haram may target his life if he returns to Nigeria.<\/p>\n

In his application for asylum, Ringim reportedly informed UK officials that he narrowly escaped death in June 2011 when the Police Force Headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria\u2019s capital, was bombed.<\/p>\n

The attack occurred a few days after he threatened to crush the terrorist group.<\/p>\n

Ringim told the British agency that on 6 June, 2011, his Deputy, Abubakar Ningi was murdered alongside his police orderly and a driver by the Boko Haram sect.<\/p>\n

He also referred to the killing of a civil war veteran, General Mamman Shuwa by the extremists.<\/p>\n

During Ringim\u2019s tenure, the United Nations\u2019 office in Abuja was also bombed and 25 people were killed, while several others were severely injured.<\/p>\n
