A four-man gun-running gang, including a serving army Corporal, Okolugbo Anthony, have been arrested by the Delta State Police Command in Asaba.

Corporal Okolugbo who hails from Ogwashi-Uku in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State, is attached to the 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze in Imo State.

The gun-running suspects were arrested on April 26 by a team crack detectives of the Command’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in an undisclosed Hotel in Asaba, capital of Delta State, South-South Nigeria.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba who paraded the suspects in Asaba, said his men “swooped on the gang of gun-running syndicate in the course of their unholy business transaction.”

Aduba told journalists that two prohibited pump action rifles and 25 rounds of live cartridges were recovered from the suspects.

Corporal Okolugbo however denied involvement in the alleged gun-running deal, adding that he had never sold arms before, but that it was set up by the police.

“An informant approached me and told me that a Senator needed a gun, but I told him that I was not in possession of any gun. But he was persistent in his request and I have to link up to somebody who brought
the gun.

“All of us, including the informant and the supplier of the gun, went to the hotel to see the Senator, but we were rounded up there by the police. That is why I said it was a set up by the police. I have never been involved in gun-running,” he said.

The Police Commissioner however debunked Corporal Okolugbo’s claim to a set-up by the police, adding that a signal was sent to the military formation in Obinze on the development. He noted that the suspects were helping his Command with their investigation into the matter.
