The Lagos State Government has inaugurated the 4th Lagos Children\u2019s Parliament, an initiative designed to ensure the participation of children and the younger generation on issues that affects their well being.<\/p>\n

Inaugurating the parliament in her office, the Deputy Governor Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire said that the children\u2019s parliament was recommended by the United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF) and adopted by the Nigerian government in 2005 to provide a veritable platform for children to exercise their democratic rights.<\/p>\n

The Deputy Governor noted that Lagos State established the Parliament in 2005, adding that since inception members have performed creditably well as representatives of other children, while also serving as role models to them.<\/p>\n

She added that the objective of instilling leadership skills in the children is achieving the desired results through the parliament, adding that with the quality of deliberations and suggestions put forward by the children, they have developed good capacity and responsible citizenship, which she hopes will help shape a better future for the state and country.<\/p>\n

Adefulire charged the new parliamentarians to be focused and be prepared for the task ahead.<\/p>\n

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Risikat Akiode, said the children representatives have continued to live to their responsibilities by deliberating on relevant issues such as child rights, violence, child abuse and other vices inimical to the proper development of the children.<\/p>\n

The Permanent Secretary advised the new representatives to ensure they are good ambassadors of their family, local government as well as the state and country in general.<\/p>\n

Highlight of the occasion was the administering of oath on the new \u2018honorables\u2019, by the Deputy Governor.<\/p>\n

The ceremony was attended by top government functionaries, parents and guardians as well as scores of students and youths from the state.<\/p>\n
