As the political crisis in the oil-rich Rivers state festers,the the National Association of Nigerian Students, the umbrella body of all Nigerian students, NANS, has appealed to the Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi not to be distracted by the activities of political opponents who are bent on destabilizing his government.<\/p>\n

At a solidarity march to Government House, Port Harcourt, outgoing President of the National Union of Rivers State Students, (NURSS), Warmete Awoloye said students are disturbed that the political crisis in the state is capable of
endangering the state.<\/p>\n

Awoloye stated that Rivers State students will not condone injustice against the Amaechi led administration, nor allow detractors against his developmental strides.<\/p>\n

\u201cRivers State students will not allow injustice in the state, we will not allow detractors. We are appealing to Governor Amaechi not to be distracted, he should focus on his development strides\u201d, Awoloye said.<\/p>\n

He stressed that students have given their unflinching support to the Amaechi\u2019s administration which places education as its priority, assuring that students will remain peaceful and law-abiding in the state.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to give you our unflinching support. I want to vouch that students will remain peaceful in Rivers State\u201d, Awoloye stated.<\/p>\n

Also speaking, the incoming President of National Union of Rivers State Students, NURSS, Maxi Lucky Chukwuladi said, Rivers State students are aware of the polarization in the state and would not fold its hands and watch the act of oppression, because Professor Wole Soyinka once said that the man in you dies in the face of oppression.<\/p>\n

Governor Amaechi was a former President of NURSS.<\/p>\n

The new President of NURSS asserted that it will become unjust for students to fold their hands and watch any political group hijack student structure for their personal gains.<\/p>\n

Chukwuladi also appealed to the Amaechi led administration to consider the appointment of Special Assistant to the Governor on Students Affairs to properly coordinate and direct the affairs of students in the state.<\/p>\n

On his part, the Leader of the Joint Campuses Committee of National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Rivers State Chapter, Lar Amabu, expressed solidarity for the developmental strides of Governor Amaechi in the past seven years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe students of Nigeria will not be in Rivers State and allow thing to go wrong, because we are at the receiving end. In the past seven years, we can sleep with our eyes closed. No more shooting in the campuses, no more cultism, no more political killings, security is rest assured. We cannot go back to the doomed days when things were going wrong\u201d, Amabu said.<\/p>\n

Responding Chief of Staff to the Governor, Chief Tony Okocha commended the students for the solidarity visit and for refusing to seat on the fence.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrantz Fanon once said, the hottest place in hell is prepared for that man who when the issues of moral rectitude is discussed, decided to sit on the fence. I knew that students will not want to sit on the fence when issues like this are raised. I assure you that we will not be distracted. I want to assure you that, the Egyptians you see today, you will see them no more\u201d.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Chidi Lloyd said it was a wise decision by the students not to leave the issues of governance in the hands of politicians alone.<\/p>\n

He expressed assurance that Governor Amaechi and the Government of Rivers State were on top of the situation and advised the students to keep the peace in their various campuses.<\/p>\n
