Out of 1, 644, 110 candidates who sat this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), only 10 scored 300 and above, it was learnt yesterday. 628 other candidates scored between 270 and 299.

The foregoing were revealed by the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, barely seven days after the board conducted this year’s UTME.

Briefing newsmen at the board’s corporate headquarters, Bwari, Abuja, Ojerinde also said a total of 12,110 candidates’ results out of the total 1,644,110 who sat for the paper and pencil test and dual based test were being withheld for examination malpractices.

He added that the results of another 68,309 candidates from various centres were also undergoing further screening to ascertain their capability.

This was as he also said that a total of 40,692 candidates’ results were invalid due to multiple shading or no shading at all.

Ojerinde, who displayed long sleeve shirts bearing ready made answers and worn by candidates to the examination centres, warned internet fraudsters who, according to him, had been telling candidates that they could upgrade their results in one form or the other.

He disclosed that a total of 47,974 candidates were absent from the examination.

The analysis of the results released showed that 1,670,833 candidates applied to universities, 28,977 candidates applied to polytechnics, 28,445 candidates applied to colleges of education while only 25 candidates applied to innovate enterprises institutes.

His words: “Last year, we had cases of specially designed slippers otherwise tagged ‘Magic Slippers’ which desperate candidates used to perpetuate malpractices. This year witnessed a new turn as candidates wore long sleeves shirts that bore imprint of prepared answers. The vigilant eyes of my staff caught three of such T-shirts as exhibit.

“Information reaching us in JAMB shows that some internet fraudsters are already telling candidates that their results could be upgraded in one form or the other. This is pure deceit. Some even have fake answers on Facebook, calling on candidates to print them out. The public and candidates are hereby advised to disregard these fraudsters since they do not have access to our data. Only the lazy and the gullible will fall victim.”

He disclosed that JAMB had made adequate arrangements for the checking of the results, which he said were already on the board’s website.

“The results can be checked on WWW.jambresult.com using the candidate’s registration numbers,” he said.
