Chelsea’s last gasp victory at Old Trafford today, thanks to Juan Mata’s 87th-minute winner, has tightened their grip on a Champions League spot. They are now third on the league table, behind the champions Manchester United and Manchester City.

Arsenal, in fourth position is sandwiched between Tottenham and Chelsea.

Arsenal have 67 points, one behind Chelsea with 68 points. Tottenham are two points away from Arsenal, with a game in hand, to equal Arsenal’s 36. Chelsea too have a game in hand.

All the three teams are desperate for a Champions League spot. The problem is that only two positions remain, out of four. Man U have bagged one. Man City, with 72 points have bagged the second slot, so it seems.

What is left is a scramble, a riveting three-horse race, among Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspurs.

Arsene Wenger: Champions League in doubt

It is a race, where all the contending teams cannot afford to stumble or falter.

The first decisive match to decide who gets what, will come up on Wednesday 8 May, between Chelsea and Tottenham at Stamford Bridge. The match will enable the two teams match Arsenal’s 36 matches.

If Chelsea win, their points will go to 71, one behind Man City, which would have met West Brom a day earlier in Manchester and most likely have added to their tally. Arsenal will stay at 67, four points behind and Tottenham, will remain at 65.

If Spurs and Chelsea end their London derby in a draw, Arsenal will still have some hopes, if they do not collapse in their last two matches against a desperate Wigan, that want to avoid relegation and Newcastle, that have suffered many humiliating defeats this season and also battling for survival from relegation.

Norwich, Southampton, Sunderland, Wigan, Newcastle are all battling to avoid being the last team to go down with QPR and Reading. Two of these drowning teams are billed to meet an equally desperate Arsenal, with eyes on Champions League.

Chelsea and Tottenham also have their own jitters too. Chelsea will meet Aston Villa and on the final day, 19 May, meet Everton.

Tottenham, on their part, have the hurdles of Stoke City and Sunderland to scale.

Which team will stumble? It is soccer. Anything can happen, anything is possible!
