Amidst expert prediction that Nigeria is for decades of darkness, without atable electricity, the Federal Government has approved 3.7 billion U.S. dollar (about N592 billion) to boost power transmission, as part of efforts to achieve its target of 20,000 megawatts.<\/p>\n

Vice-President Namadi Sambo disclosed this at an interactive session with Nigeria-Canadian Association in Toronto, Canada, according to a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by Malam Umar Sani, his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity,<\/p>\n

The statement said that Sambo, who narrated the achievements and challenges of President Goodluck Jonathan\u2019s administration, pledged the administration\u2019s commitment to providing the necessary infrastructure for the country.<\/p>\n

It said that Sambo gave an assurance that development efforts were being intensified in areas such as power supply, transportation, aviation, ICT and agriculture.<\/p>\n

It said that he also expressed the government\u2019s commitment to providing affordable healthcare services, while addressing issues such as educational advancement and provision of good governance.<\/p>\n

The statement quoted Sambo as appreciating the contributions of Nigerians living abroad to the country\u2019s development, saying that it was in recognition of their contributions that a Diaspora Bond of N1 billion was set up.<\/p>\n

It said that Sambo urged Nigerians living in Canada to key into the laudable initiative, while calling on citizens living overseas to come home and contribute to the country\u2019s development.<\/p>\n

Besides, the statement said that Mr Fabian Nwoha, the President of the Nigeria-Canadian Association, who expressed the association\u2019s desire to contribute positively to Nigeria\u2019s development, however, bemoaned the negative incidences and other vices reported in the country.<\/p>\n

It said that Nwoha, nonetheless, expressed the association\u2019s confidence in the ability of the Jonathan-administration to deliver on its promises.<\/p>\n

He, however, reminded the Federal Government about its promise to establish a consular office in Toronto so as to address emerging diplomatic issues, the statement added.<\/p>\n

It said that Chief Ojo Madueke, the Nigerian High Commissioner to Canada, who also spoke at the event, commended the Canada-Nigeria Association.<\/p>\n

Highlights of the event included question-and-answer sessions, which focused on issues such as security, voting rights, women’s rights, corruption and infrastructural development.<\/p>\n

Some of the dignitaries who attended the event are the governors of Akwa Ibom and Kaduna states, the ministers of education, internal affairs and works, as well as the PDP national chairman.<\/p>\n
