Gunmen suspected to be sea pirates on Tuesday shot dead two persons in the riverside community of Kuroamagbene in the oil rich southern state of Bayelsa.

Among the victims was a relation of the Special Adviser to the Bayelsa Governor on Higher Education, Dr Godswill Ziriki.

The incident was said to have occurred at about 1a.m at the community waterfront.

Community sources told newsmen in Yenagoa that the two victims, who were in company of other youths, met their death when they tried to drive away the suspected pirates from stealing a speed boat at the community waterfront.

It was further gathered that the victims and other youths were at a wake-keep some distance away from the waterfront when they noticed an unusual movement around the speedboat.

They were said to have raised alarm, an action which allegedly angered the gunmen, who opened fire on the youth killing two in the process.

The gunmen were said to have fled the scene after the shooting.

When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Office, Mr Alex Akhigbe, told newsmen that he had received information about the attack, but added that the information was very sketchy.

He said he was awaiting detailed briefing from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Oporoma, the council headquarters, before he could speak further on the incident.

On Sunday, eight young men suspected of being ex-militia members from two rival groups were killed in a shootout in Lorbia community in the same state.

Among those killed were five youths belonging to a group led by ex-militia leader Reuben Wilson, who embraced the 2009 government amnesty.

Wilson’s 37-year-old younger brother, Benaibi Wilson, died in the clash, the former militia leader said.
