Nurses in the country under the auspices of the Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, has given the Nigeria Police and the Inspector-General of the force, 72 hours to accept responsibility and apologize for the brutality of some nurses last week by policemen in Ibadan.

The National President of the association, Mr. Abdrafiu Alani Adeniji, gave the ultimatum in Ibadan at the commemoration of the 2013 International Nurses Week at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan after the nurses had been allegedly mistaken for members of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram as they were about entering the campus.

Adeniji condemned the act at the end of the event, saying that if the police failed to accept responsibility for the violation of the human rights of the nurses and apologize, the latter would meet and take a drastic action to protest.

In his words, “On May 9, some of our members who came on invitation to the programme were mistaken for Boko Haram in front of the UI gate. The members are from Delta State. The policemen who suddenly swooped on the nurses said, “We have come for you. We suspect you to be Boko Haram. Now, all of you are under arrest.””

The shocked nurses were then reportedly whisked away to the state Police Headquarters at Eleyele.

He added: “We have strongly protested to the Commissioner of Police against the inhuman and degrading battering of our five nurses and midwives members of the organisation. It is worrisome that innocent nurses and midwives whose primary responsibility is caring for human life could be brutally treated by the police.

“We therefore demand for payment of adequate compensation for the physical and psychological damages inflicted on our esteemed members.

“IG should instlil discipline in his men because some of them are not law abiding. We give the police 72 hours to take care of these nurses and apologize.”

As at the time of this report, there had been no official statement from the police, regarding the matter.
