Explosions and gunfire rocked Daura, Katsina State hometown of former military ruler, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, on Thursday night.

The mode of attack bore the signature tune of the Islamist sect, Boko Haram, which has recorded huge losses in the 96- hour-old military operation to flush it out of the Northeast.

Three soldiers were confirmed dead in the attack.

The sect is currently facing a massive setback in its bases in Borno,Yobe and Adamawa states where the army, navy and air force are on a mission to flush it out.

Maj.-Gen. Garba Wahab, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division, Nigerian Army, said several of the invading gunmen were also killed.

The gunmen attacked four banks in the border town, stealing a yet to be determined amount of money.

They also set some police stations and prison ablaze.

Gen. Wahab said a vehicle loaded with the stolen cash was recovered, in addition to four AK-47 rifles.

He said the army and other security personnel cordoned off three areas in the city soon after the attack and began a house-to-house search “to fish out some of the wounded gunmen who forced their way into peoples’ homes’’.

He also said the army was liaising with security agencies in Niger Republic as “80 to 90 per cent of these gunmen are not Nigerians.’’

He said the operation to fish out the culprits was ongoing, and advised residents of Daura and the neighbouring local government areas of Baure, Sandamu, Mashi, and Dutsi to cooperate with security agents by reporting suspicious movements around them.

“What happened this morning (yesterday) is similar to what happened in Bama where the gunmen burnt prison and police stations to divert attention,” he said.

At a separate press briefing in Abuja on the Daura attack, Director of Civil Military Affairs, Maj-Gen. Mobolaji Koleoso, said the gunmen wore fake army uniform.

Five members of the gang, according to him, died in the exchange of gunfire with soldiers from the 35 Battalion, Katsina.

Gen. Koleoso said the soldiers responded swiftly to a distress call at 10 pm on Thursday after the insurgents stormed the town.

He said two of the insurgents were gunned down by soldiers while three of them who were fleeing in a Volkswagen Gulf car were killed when the car crashed.

Some of the gang members were also said to escape with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.

The Army appealed to hospitals and health facilities nationwide to seek clearance from security agencies before treating patients with gunshot wounds.

This, the Army maintained, would prevent fleeing insurgents with gunshot wounds from being treated and getting away to cause more havoc to members of the public.

Two soldiers were killed in the operation while another officer sustained gunshot wounds, the general added.
