Roberto Martinez has resigned as manager of Wigan.<\/p>\n

The Spaniard led the club to an historic FA Cup triumph this season but could not prevent relegation from the English Premier League, EPL.<\/p>\n

The decision has been announced after 39-year-old Martinez held talks with Wigan chairman Dave Whelan in the past week.<\/p>\n

Martinez, who joined Wigan in June 2009, is one of the leading contenders to take over at Everton.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wanted permission to move so I\u2019ve given that,\u201d said Whelan.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has 12 months left on his contract, so whoever comes in for him must pay the remainder of his contract.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe feels he\u2019s not the man to lead us back into the Premier League. I\u2019ve got to accept what he feels.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe loves Wigan and the fans. We have to move on now and want applications for the job.\u201d<\/p>\n
