A commuter bus driver whose name was given as Patrick Essien has committed suicide after he was allegedly sacked from his place of work.

The father of three was found dangling from the roof of the toilet at his residence located at Imasabemwen Street, off Siluko Road, Benin City.

Some residents of the public apartment building who spoke to journalists on condition of anonymity, said the deceased had earlier complained that he was sacked from the transport company where he worked. They however declined to give the name of the transport company.

They said a co-tenant had gone to the toilet and knocked several times without any response. But the tenant who peeped through a hole on the wooden door saw a body dangling from the roof.

“We saw him this morning. He said he was sacked and we later found him dead in the toilet,” one of the tenants told journalists, adding that the late driver had been living at the residence for the past 14 years without any wife or children but that he told them he had a wife and three kids somewhere.

His corpse was later taken away by the police.

Meanwhile, a 74 year old man, Clement Omorogbe, has been jailed by an Egor Magistrates’ Court for raping a 13 year-old girl in November 2010.

The convict was arraigned on two count charge of indecent assault.

The presiding Magistrate, Eboh Braimoh, who declined option of fine for the convict to serve as deterrent for others, noted that there were increasing cases of rape. A member of the Child Protection Network, Jennifer Ero, who had followed the trial from the beginning, described the judgment as another victory for a rape victim.
