Eleven people suspected to be students of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, arrested for their alleged involvement in the violent protest over the shooting of one of their colleagues by the police have been remanded at the federal prison at Mandala in Ilorin.

The accused were arraigned before an Ilorin magistrate court on a three-count charge of disturbance of public peace, rioting and mischief by fire.

According to the police, the rioters, armed with various offensive weapons, made bonfire on the major streets in Ilorin and destroyed some public properties including the burning down of a police post at Sakama street, Ilorin.

Police First Information Report, FIR, on the matter stated that the accused were arrested in the course of the riot by the police drafted to quell the riot.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Alhassan Jubrin, who objected to the admission of the accused to bail on the ground that investigation into the case was still ongoing, prayed the court to remand them in prison custody pending the outcome of the police investigation, while the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, Kwara state branch, that appeared for the accused through its Secretary, Barrister S .I .Abaya, urged the court to admit them to bail, arguing that the constitution presumes the accused innocent of the allegations until the contrary is proved.

Sustaining the submission of the prosecutor, the presiding Judge, Mrs. I. O. Olawoyin, ordered the remanding of the accused at the federal prison, Mandala, Ilorin till 13 June when the case would come up for further mention.
