Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) has express its concern about crude oil thieves and illegal refineries operators in the Niger delta saying the country is losing $ 1.6billion annually to oil theft. ""The company cites its forced shut down of the Nembe Creek trunk lines in Bayelsa state, a facility which produces about 150,000 barrels of crude oil per day and its declaration of force majeure on Bonny light export as part of troubles caused by the oil thieves. The closures according to Shell were to enable it remove crude oil theft connections, investigate suspected oil theft leaks and carry out repairs. Speaking at a workshop organized for media practitioners in Yenagoa, Shell’s manager, government/community relations, Evans Krukrubo said over 90 per cent of its pipelines in the region have been ruptured by suspected oil thieves. He notes that the shutdown of production at Nembe creek trunk lines would impact negatively on Bayelsa share from the federation account.
