Iju-Ishaga, the quiet border community between Lagos and Ogun state where a Dana aircraft flight 9J992 crashed one year ago, throbed yesterday. Indeed, it was reminiscent of the grief families and loved ones of the 157 victims of the accident has come to term with yesterday as relatives and friends poured out to mark the fatal flight first anniversary.
As early as 8 a. m the Murtala Muhammed Terminal 2 (MMA2) was a beehive of activities as families, representatives of airlines and aviation agencies converged for a procession to the headquarters of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority NCAA for a brief ceremony.]<\/p>\n

Managing Director of Dana Airlines, Mr. Jackie Hathiramani, noted that the airline has put in place a series of measures in place to ensure that such an accident do not re-occur again in all its flight operations.
He said the airline shared the grief of the families-\u201cOur hearts go out to all of them and they will forever be in our hearts\u201d, he said, affirming that over twenty-three families of the victims of the Dana Air ill-fated crash on its McDonnell Douglas MD-83 aircraft have received US$ 100,000 each as full compensation.<\/p>\n

At the Iju\/Ishaja site of the crash, Lagos state Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, said many nations and their nationalities from India, China, the United States and Nigeria were united by a common grief.
He said \u201cit was an accident that took place in Lagos, but its impact and reach were beyond our borders, men and women, Muslims and Christians, Hindus and atheists became joined by a common pain, it was a horrific day.\u201d
Fashola, later laid a wreath and unveil a cenotaph erected in memory of the victims said the memories of June 3, 2012 are probably as fresh are they are painful as families may have to pushed the innermost recesses of their minds to enable them to get on with their daily lives.<\/p>\n

According to Fashola, \u201cwhat l do know is that today, although our grief is deep and senses of loss unquantifiable, our heads are not bowed. We are not crest fallen. Your undying spirit to continue and your presence here today is a sign of monumental courage.
\u201cIt is not courage without pain but one defined by dignity and resolve to get on with life in spite of the pains that has kept the families going.
\u201cThis monument will stand as a permanent memorial to these families\u2019 men, women, and children; and we will cherish each of their stories \u2013 stories of potential and of fulfillment, stories of true heroes.\u201d
Speaking on behalf of the bereaved families, Dr. Ben Anyene said Nigerians must be concerned with what is happening in the aviation industry and thank the Lagos state government for the relief materials and assistance it rendered the families at the aftermath of the crash.<\/p>\n
