Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan has appointed General Martin Luther Agwai (rtd.) as the new Deputy Chairman of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P), according to a statement by Reuben Abati, adviser on media and publicity.

General Agwai, a former Chief of Defence Staff and Chief of Army Staff replaces Major-General Mamman Kontagora who died last week.

The highly-decorated General who also held several other military appointments within and outside the country, including Deputy Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone and Force Commander of the African Union Mission in Sudan, has been a member of the SURE-P Committee since its establishment by the Jonathan Administration in February last year.

The committee, headed by Dr. Christopher Kolade, a former ambassador of Nigeria to the United Kingdom, is charged with the responsibility of managing and reinvesting the Federal Government’s share of the savings from the partial removal of the subsidy on fuel in programmes and initiatives that will improve the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians.
