Isaac Ekpo, current World Boxing Organisation, WBO’s, African Super Middleweight champion, charged upcoming boxers in the country not to entirely depend on government’s support for their career fulfilment.

The 31-year-old boxer, who is also a personnel of the Nigerian Army told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN in Lagos that any boxer who only waited for government support without looking outward, would fail to reach the peak of his or her career.

“Let them shift focus away from government. Their careers should not be tied only to government support, but they should train hard and one day, they will be able to get managers,

even when I was an amateur boxer, I didn’t entirely wait for government to encourage me. I know that if I put in my personal efforts and resources, one day I will be noticed and will get sponsors” Ekpo nicknamed “Burn of Fire” stated.

He further added thus “Making a name in the world of boxing is not tied to government support. It is the question of training, determination and prayers, so as to be noticed”.

Ekpo urged the upcoming boxers to shun all discouraging situations that may run counter to their dreams, saying that they should brace up to become champions.

“They need to be focused and determined as nothing good comes easily. Even when they fall, they should not lose hope but intensify their training, I starved myself, my wife and children to get to this point. No one was there for me but because of my passion to be known, I persisted, not minding the odds,“ he said.

Ekpo said he was set to defend his title with all his might in the bout against Ayitey Powers from Ghana.

The defence title bout would hold in Cotonou, Benin Republic, later this month.

NAN reports that Ekpo became the African Super Middleweight Champion in December 2012, after knocking out Said Mada of Algeria at the Expo Hall of the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos.
