\"\" Epidemic has been identified as the third ranked natural disaster, after drought and flood, in the country which has claimed many lives and need to be addressed through awareness and sensitization programmes as well as free immunization exercises in curbing the menace.<\/em><\/strong> Medical experts at a workshop on sensitization and awareness on cerebrospinal meningitis <\/em>measles, cholera and lassa fever in Jos, Plateau state observed that epidemic occurs due to illiteracy, ignorance, poor state of personnel and environmental hygiene. The one day workshop was organized by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), north central zone, for teachers, district heads and health workers within the zone so as to know the causative organisms, signs and symptoms, prevention and control measures of these epidemics. NEMA North Central Zonal Coordinator, Muhammed Abdulsalam identified disaster management as regular evolving strategies, policies and programmes in reducing loss of lives and properties in our communities. Representative of the World Health Organisation, Dr Adekunle Oladipo and Director Pry Health Care, Benue State, Dr Joseph Kumba urged Nigerians to keep a hygienic environment and report suspected cases of outbreaks to medical personnel for immediate response. Topics discussed at the sensitization workshop include control of epidemics and national priority, community involvement in control of epidemic prone diseases as well as investigation of epidemics outbreak. The workshop is to sensitize participants on managing\u00a0and identifying symptoms and treatments of any outbreak.<\/p>\n
