The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has urged Nigerian government to withdraw the directive\u00a0 to the 36 states of the federation on execution of prisoners on death row across the country and to pay adequate compensation to the families of the four prisoners already unlawfully executed.<\/p>\n

In a request for provisional measures dated 25 June, 2013 and signed by solicitor to SERAP, Femi Falana SAN, the organization asked the African Commission to urgently exercise its authority to request Nigeria to immediately withdraw the directive by President Goodluck Jonathan to 36 states of the federation to execute all death row prisoners and fully accord the prisoners their fair trial and other human rights, pending the commission\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n

The request for provisional measures was submitted in conjunction with SERAP\u2019s communication to the African Commission.<\/p>\n

According to SERAP,\u201cUnless the African Commission urgently intervenes in this case, there is a risk of irreversible denial of several deathrow prisoners in Nigeria, which in turn will render nugatory the resolutions on moratorium on executions by the African Commission and the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly.\u201d<\/p>\n

SERAP also asked Nigeria to ensure that prisoners on deathrow in prisons across the country receive fair trial and other international human rights guarantees applicable to their situation, including granting them their right to appeal.<\/p>\n

Therefore, SERAP\u2019s urgent intervention is required to ensure that the prisoners\u2019 right to life is not unjustly and illegally violated.<\/p>\n

SERAP wants Nigeria to \u201cundertake a prompt review of its legal framework and administrative practices on the use of the death penalty to ensure their consistency with the resolutions on moratorium on executions by the African Commission and the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly.\u201d<\/p>\n
