Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, yesterday berated the shortage of federal projects in the state, noting that the state could boast of less than 100 km of federal roads.

The governor spoke in Yenagoa yesterday, when the House of Representatives Committee on Works paid him a courtesy visit in his office. The committee was led by its chairman Ogbuefi Ozumgbachi.

Governor Dickson used the visit to appeal to the federal government to assist in the completion of the Nembe- Brass and Ekeremor – Agge roads, saying that the projects were critical to the life wire of the state.

In the words of the governor, “Our concern is that Bayelsa state has the least federal roads, infrastructure and we have less than 100 km of roads executed by the federal government,” he said.

The governor, who also revealed that the cost of the Nembe -Brass road project stood at N100billion, maintained that the state government cannot afford to execute the project alone. Earlier, Hon. Ozumgbachi informed the governor that his team was in Bayelsa State to inspect the 33.5km road project stretching from Yenegwe- Kolo-Ogbia-Nembe- Brass road project which was awarded in 2009.

According to him, the sum of N2billion had been released to the contracting firm to complete the project. The committee chairman also expressed his regrets over challenges face by Nigeria in the area of decay in federal roads and other infrastructures.

He however assured the governor that the committee, in its oversight functions, would not compromise on good standards from government contractors handling any federal projects.

Hon. Ozumgbachi also said that the committee may have to recommend appropriate sanctions on any contractor that failed to deliver on their projects according to the specifications of the federal government.
