Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi has said that he is now set to play for the Super Eagles of Nigeria again.

Ameobi 31, has featured for Nigeria once in a friendly against Venezuela in November last year at Marlins Park Stadium in Miami. Eagles head coach Stephen Keshi had then invited him to participate in the African Cup of Nations in South Africa but the player could not join the squad as there is a clause in his Newcastle contract preventing him from doing so.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew, said at the time that Ameobi will not be released to play in the Nations Cup as he has a clause in his contract which precludes him from national duty. Nigeria’s Football Federation (NFF) had vowed to fight for the release of Ameobi by invoking the FIFA clause that stipulates a club must release a player at least 14 days before a major competition but later backed down and went to the tournament without the player.

Now, however, Ameobi has declared that the clause that prevented him from going to the Nations Cup, has now been rectified. Keshi has already been resigned to pursuing the remaining World Cup qualifiers without the player but may have to consider this in the light of new developments.

Ameobi said: “I will love to play for Nigeria under Stephen Keshi because he is a good coach. Above all I am very proud to be a Nigerian and will always grab the opportunity to don the green white colours of my fatherland.”

Earlier this week, Keshi appeared to have to shut the door on Ameobi, adding that he believes other players should be given an opportunity. He said that despite the fact that the player showed a lot of experience when he played against Venezuela last year, team handlers have not been able to get him to return to the Super Eagles.
