A mild drama played out at Glo X-Factor Boot Camp last week as one of the contestants, Sarah, refused to leave the camp after being disqualified. Sarah, who had impressed the judges at the Abuja audition of the show failed to replicate the standard she set for herself, as she could not pass the task set by one of the judges, Reggie Rockstone. Each of the three judges had asked the contestants to perform a task as part of measures to prune the number of contestants. While Sarah scaled Onyeka Onwenu’s task of singing a love song, she could not impress the judges with her dance step while performing the task of singing and dancing at the same time as set by Rockstone.

Sarah flatly rejected the judge’s decision to evict her from the camp. Backstage, she put a call through to her mother, crying, “Mum, can you believe they dropped me. They put me among people that cannot dance. They dumped me. I have been dancing since I was five years old. They dumped me mum, they dumped me.”

She then insisted on having another audience with the judges. However, she went back on stage and declared to the stunned judges, “What I know is that I am better than all these people you picked. I have talent. I am better than them.”

Onyeka tried to interject and explain to her why she was not good enough for the next stage but Sarah was not done yet as she continued, “I cannot come here and let my dream be crushed. I was born singing and dancing. I have talent, I am a good dancer.”

Her persistence eventually paid off when the judges decided to give her and two other ladies who had performed with her a second chance. They came back on stage, started promisingly with their song and dance task. However, Sarah failed again. To the amazement of the judges and audience, Sarah froze after a few seconds, stepped back, pulling a long face, even while the other two contestants continued singing and dancing. The judges had had enough.

“Showbiz is more than looking pretty and having a wonderful voice. There is a spirit behind it, a spirit that accommodates, a spirit that faces anything and keeps a straight face,” Onyeka told her. Again Sarah requested for yet another chance, which the judges bluntly refused this time.
