Former Minister of Sports, Bala Bawa Kaoje, has slammed the current Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi over his decision to probe a bonus row involving the Super Eagles after last month’s 2014 World Cup qualifier in Namibia.

The Super Eagles rejected the reduced bonus approved for them by a cash-strapped Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, after two World Cup qualifiers in Kenya and Namibia, and Abdullahi has decided to set up a probe panel but Bawa Kaoje believes it is medicine after death.

Speaking against the backdrop of the probe panel, Kaoje is of the opinion that there is no reason behind setting up the panel; instead the current Sports Minister should look forward to a better working relationship between the team and the board of the NFF.

The players initially refused to board the plane for Brazil for the FIFA Confederations Cup before they were eventually persuaded by officials, but Kaoje feels that if the NFF had put its house in order, such a thing wouldn’t have occurred.

According to him “I don’t see any sense in setting up the panel because it runs contrary to what is expected of the sports ministry, they should just work out modalities to forestall a recurrence.”

The NFF offered to pay $ 5,000 for a win and $ 2,500 for a draw, but the players insisted on getting $ 10,000 for a win and $ 5,000 for a draw.

A statement signed by the Special Adviser on media to Abdullahi, Julius Ogunro, the probe panel will be chaired by Segun Adeniyi, a former presidential aide who was also on a Presidential Task Force for the 2010 World Cup.

Other members of the panel include Shehu Dikko, who is part of the League Management Company as well as journalists Onoiche Anibeze and Aisha Falode.

The panel is to determine the causes of the crisis over the match bonus, develop a code of conduct for players on national assignments among other terms of references. The panel will be inaugurated on Thursday and has two weeks to submit its report.
