The Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit has returned seized goods worth over N7 million to the owners.<\/p>\n

The goods were seized by taskforce on Friday at Idumota area of Lagos, southwest Nigeria, from traders who took over a portion of the road for trading.<\/p>\n

Items seized include jewellery, clothing materials and household items.<\/p>\n

The government decided to release the items in the spirit of Ramadan and after the traders had pleaded passionately.<\/p>\n

Taskforce Chairman, Bayo Sulaiman, Chief Superintendent of Police, lamented that traders had taken over half of the road at Idumota for trading, thus causing traffic gridlock in the area at night.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe went there on Friday night and seized the goods. We decided to give them back the items because of much pleading by the traders and most of them have lost everything. They have been pleading and crying and we decided to give them back on compassionate ground.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the first time we will be doing this by releasing seized goods back to their owners and this will be the last time we will be doing this. When we seize goods, we don\u2019t always release such to their owners,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

Sulaiman stated that releasing the goods back to their owners served as correctional measure as roads were not meant to be used for trading purpose, saying that the seized goods is worth about N7 million.<\/p>\n

He warned traders in places like Berger, Agege and the rest who convert half of the road for trading to desist from such act as the taskforce would go after them.<\/p>\n

One of the traders, Mrs Toyin Mustapha admitted that her goods were seized on the road at Idumota and commended the taskforce for releasing the goods back to her, promising that she would not trade on the road again.<\/p>\n

According to Fatima Sulaiman, who deals in jewellery, she decided to sell her wares on the road because of the high cost of renting a shop, but noted that she had learnt her lesson, while Monsurat Yakub corroborated her statement.<\/p>\n
