To many people around the world, Nigeria seems to be a very strange country. The closer you look, the lesser you understand. The richer the country, the poorer the masses.

The announcement a few days ago by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, that electricity tariff will continue to rise even as darkness continues to persist and services continue to collapse has further confirmed the conviction of many that our country is a failed state and our leaders are definitely the wrong ones.

The commission, while defending the Federal Government’s position on the recent increase in fixed electricity charges, said the Multi Year Tariff Order had an approved tariff stipulated for 2012 to 2016. In other words, there would be increase in electricity tariff every year till 2016 regardless of whether the services improve or not; regardless of whether we languish in darkness or not.

The authorities even shamelessly explained that every year, the fixed cost will go up and the energy cost will continue to skyrocket regardless of the services rendered. The Chairman of NERC, Dr. Sam Amadi, left many Nigerians baffled on Monday when he shamelessly said the truth is that the tariff must increase despite shortfalls in service delivery. He even argued that the inability of power distribution companies to live up to expectation was not a tenable reason to slash tariff.

We do not understand this type of accounting system or this type of logic.

We find these statements not only preposterous but also highly illogical and callous. We are also appalled that our federal legislators can sit comfortably in Abuja and watch as the masses are further pushed down the ladder of poverty and misery through outrageous hike in electricity tariff. With their fat salaries and huge allowances, they seem to have forgotten their mission and the duty they owe their constituents. They make noise once they are not yet in government but once they are in Abuja, they forget to remember the hardship they went through all the years before they hit the ‘gold mine’ in Abuja. We are also at a loss that a few individuals seem to have taken the entire country hostage and are dictating what happens to about 170 million Nigerians.

It should not continue that way. Nigerians must not allow this brazen disregard for their plight to persist. It appears the people in authority are out to destroy the entire country through their wicked, anti-people policies.

The increase in electricity tariff should be commensurate with the amount of electricity supplied. Anything less should be rejected. The perceived docility of Nigerians is not a licence for the leaders to continue to chastise them with harsh policies.
