Tempers flared in Osogbo, on Friday, when members of the Peoples Democratic Party resisted an attempt by the state government to demolish their state secretariat for urban renewal purpose.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the day, bulldozers belonging to the state government had pulled down parts of Governor Rauf Aregbesola\u2019s campaign secretariat located somewhere along Gbongan-Osogbo Road and portions of several buildings belonging to banks, public and private agencies.<\/p>\n

But when officials of the state government got to the PDP secretariat located a few metres from the Aregbesola campaign secretariat, they were resisted by PDP members, who vowed to disrupt law and order if the demolition took place.<\/p>\n

Wielding weapons and chanting anti-government songs, the PDP members said the planned demolition was in bad taste, adding that the PDP was not given any demolition notice.<\/p>\n

Osun State PDP Chairman, Alhaji Gani Olaoluwa, who said the planned demolition was political, maintained that the state government was uncomfortable with PDP\u2019s popularity in the state.<\/p>\n

A member of the PDP, who craved anonymity, said, \u201cWhen they saw our weapons and our battle readiness to combat them, all their policemen and OYES cadets ran away.\u201d<\/p>\n

The member, who was at the PDP secretariat when the demolition was thwarted said, \u201cWe are not ready to allow them to demolish our secretariat. The ACN is afraid of our popularity and the location of our secretariat. We will defend our secretariat with our blood.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Osun State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Chief Sunday Akere, debunked the allegations of the PDP, saying there was no politics in the demolition exercise.<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cThe PDP is insincere. We have evidence that the PDP was<\/p>\n

served with a notice of demolition last December. It is in PDP\u2019s character to lie, cause chaos and plunder. Look at the beautification exercise the government has done from the state secretariat area, you will understand the need for Osun to be beautified.\u201d<\/p>\n
