Legal practitioners in the country have been urged to guard their integrity jealously as it is their trademark. This advice was given by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun of the Supreme Court at a prayer session cum reception organized by Muslim Lawyers’ Association of Nigeria (MULAN) in honour of newly promoted justices of the Supreme Court, judges of appellate courts and Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs).

The event featured an Iftar (breaking of fast) session with newly appointed justices and senior members of the Bar.

On the honour list were Justice Kekere-Ekun, Justice Habeeb Abiru of Court of Appeal and two other newly-appointed Lagos State High Court judges (Justice Aliu Safari and Justice Abdul Wasiu Animasahun). The honourees admonished Muslim legal practitioners to be good ambassadors of Islam and role models to the younger ones in the profession.

The organisers applauded the honourees for proving their mettle in the legal profession and for their immense contributions to the growth of Islam in the country and among legal practitioners.

Speaking at the occasion, MULAN chairman, Lagos State chapter, Barrister Musoddiq Adele Sanni appreciated the cordial relationship between the association and Lagos State government.

According to him, MULAN has always been a partner in progress with the State House of Assembly as regards enactment of bills that affect Islam or Muslim interest in the state.

He said MULAN was always invited to make contributions in the process of lawmaking, noting that the association participated in the debate on Shariah law, cremation and many other issues of public importance in the Lagos State House of Assembly.

He added that the robust relationship between the government and the association led to the inclusion of Section 22 (3) of Lagos State Customary Law which made the state designate a court to adjudicate on Islamic law and matters in marriage, divorce and inheritance as it deems fit.

According to Sanni, the group’s cordial relationship with the state government has benefited both parties while it has also averted many religious crisis in the state.

Justice Kazeem Alogba, the Solicitor-General of the state, Lawal Pedro, chairman of the occasion, Chief Sofola (SAN) and many other dignitaries that graced the occasion urged all Muslim lawyers to be their brother’s keeper and contribute to the propagation of Islam through their legal practice.
