From: Ali Abanre, Lafia

Contrary to initial claims by the chief priest of the Ombatse cultists, Baba Alakio, suggesting that no invitation was extended to him by the authorities to appear before it, the Emir of Lafia, Alhaji Isa Mustapha Agwai II, yesterday, indicted Baba Alakio, explaining that the Lafia Emirate council had earlier invited him to appear before it to answer to the allegation of forcefully administering concoctions at a secret shrine in Alakio village but he refused to honour the invitation.

The Emir made the claims during the presentation of a memo to the commission of inquiry sitting in Lafia, Nasarawa State, pointing out that the priest had refused to honour invitations for him to appear before the Emirate Council to explain himself. According to the memo submitted by the emir, the Emirate council, had on February 19, received reports about the alleged activities of the priest and his converts at the shrine, from two village heads of Ungwar Rere in Akurba, and Bakin Rijiya, respectively, following which the Emir directed the district head in charge of the area to summon both the village head of Ungwar Rere and the ward head of Alakio, both of whom appeared before the Emir on March 26 to receive directives to produce Baba Alakio.

“A week later, the ward head reported back to His Highness and informed the Emir that Baba Alakio said he will honour His Highness’ invitation only when he received instruction from the chairman of Eggon Cultural Development Association (ECDA).
“The Emirate Council viewed the refusal of Baba Alakyo to honour His Highness as very unusual. It is our belief that if the so called Baba Alakio had honoured the Emir’s invitation and availed himself, with the wise counsel of His Royal Highness, the incident that happened at Alakio few days after Baba Alakyo refused to appear before His Highness, would have been averted”, the memo said in part.
The Emir also raised a number of observations in the memo, noting that there has been an apparent infiltration of strange elements into the culture and traditions of the people, making difficult to control the youths, just as it added that “the activities of our political class where our people, mostly youths are misused by them, is also a very big contributive factor to the high level of insecurity in our society.”
He equally indicted Senator Solomon Ewuga, who he faulted for paying a courtesy visit to Baba Alakio without following due protocol, stressing that even though the Senator came from the northern senatorial zone of the state, he visited Alakio without informing the Lafia Emirate council.
The emir lamented that “it was like he (Ewuga) went there to congratulate his people for their victory over the security personnel”, just as he frowned that the senator, who is representing a different zone, was in Nasarawa-South on such a visit, without stopping at the palace for a visit.
“As if that was not enough, His Highness, members of his council and the entire general public watched on the television a courtesy visit by Senator Solomon Ewuga to the priest at Alakio where the senator had an undisclosed meeting with him (Baba Alakio),” the memo said.
