Governor Kayode Fayemi of the western Nigerian state of Ekiti has given out cash awards to athletes that won medals for the state at the 18th National Sports Festival (NSF) hosted by Lagos last year.<\/p>\n

The governor also offered employment to some of the medallists.<\/p>\n

The General Manager, Ekiti State Sports Council, Olusola Adewunmi, described the gesture as a morale booster.<\/p>\n

“This will spur athletes to take their vocation seriously,\u2019\u2019 Adewunmi told the News Agency of Nigeria.<\/p>\n

He said that gold medallists took home, N250, 000; silver medallists, N200, 000 while bronze medallists went home with N150, 000 each.<\/p>\n

According to him, the coaches were not left out of the largess as those whose teams won gold medals received N150, 000 each, while silver and bronze medal winning coaches got N100, 000.<\/p>\n

“This will go a long way in encouraging the athletes to remain focussed and intensify effort in future events.<\/p>\n

“I believe that offering them employment will secure their future in a way, because they cannot be athletes forever,\u2019\u2019 Adewunmi said.<\/p>\n

Team Ekiti was placed 16th on the medals table with five gold medals, one silver and 10 bronze medals at the festival that ran from Nov. 27 to Dec. 9, 2012.<\/p>\n
